Supporting signatures

In Bundestag and European elections, some nominations of candidates must be signed by a specific number of persons entitled to vote. By signing, these people show that they are in favour of the nomination. This is to ensure that only serious nominations with an appreciable number of supporters among the electorate will stand for election.

In the case of established political parties it can be assumed that there is a sufficient number of supporters among the electorate. Therefore, they do not have to submit supporting signatures.

From the 2025 Bundestag election onwards, only the place of residence of the named candidate must be indicated on the official forms for the collection of supporting signatures for both constituency nominations and for Land lists.
