2024 European election: announcement of voter turnout by 2 p.m. and provisional election result

WIESBADEN/BERLIN – When voters go to the polls to elect the 10th European Parliament on Sunday, 9 June 2024, the Federal Returning Officer will establish and announce the “voter turnout by 2 p.m. (intermediate result)” in the afternoon and the official provisional election result during election night.

The intermediate result for voter turnout by 2 p.m. will be determined on the basis of voter turnout at selected polling stations, excluding postal votes. The result is expected to be available at around 3.30 p.m. and will be released by the Federal Returning Officer.

Polling stations in Germany will close at 6 p.m. on the day of the European election. Then the electoral boards will begin counting the votes in the polling stations.

Once polling stations in Italy – the last EU Member State to vote – close at 11 p.m., the results available by then for all lists of nominated candidates will be posted on the website of the Federal Returning Officer (rural and urban administrative district level and higher). All results subsequently received will be published on the internet on an ongoing basis and aggregated to produce intermediate Länder and federal results.

The official provisional result is expected to be announced in the early morning of 10 June. Afterwards, detailed results will be available in PDF format on the website of the Federal Returning Officer.

Forecasts and extrapolated results that are generally released from 6 p.m. onwards on election day originate solely from electoral research institutes. They are based on exit polls and the first results of the public counting of votes in individual polling stations.
