2019 European Election: Go to the polls on 26 May!

WIESBADEN/BERLIN – A total of 96 members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany will be elected on 26 May 2019. The Federal Returning Officer reports that the polling stations in Germany will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day (Sunday).

The European election is of special importance as it permits voters to influence future political decision-making within the European Union. Therefore the Federal Returning Officer is appealing to all citizens entitled to vote to go to the polls.

And by the way: persons who are entitled to vote but have misplaced or lost their voter's notification may nevertheless cast their vote in the European election. However, voters have to be on the voters' register of their polling district to do so. This is the case if they have received their voter's notification. Upon request, the local authority will let voters know at which polling station they can cast their votes. At the polling station, they will have to present their identity card or passport if the electoral board asks for it, and Union citizens their national identity card.

Voters not able to be present in person on election day may apply for the polling card and the documents required for postal voting until 6 p.m. today; in exceptional cases (e.g. provable sudden illness) this can be done until election day, 26 May 2019, 3 p.m. Those who deliver their application at the electoral office will be given the postal voting documents immediately and may cast their votes directly there and then.
