Press release no. 33/24 of 4. Juni 2024

2024 European election: send your postal ballot return letter now

WIESBADEN – The Federal Returning Officer advises all postal voters that postal ballot return letters containing the completed ballot papers for the European election must have arrived at the competent authority on election day (next Sunday, 9 June 2024) by 6 p.m. at the latest. Only then can the vote be counted in the European election.

The Federal Returning Officer also advises all postal voters who have not yet completed and returned their postal voting documents to post their postal ballot return letters without delay, either today or tomorrow at the latest. It is also possible to deliver the postal ballot return letter personally – or have it delivered – in time to the address indicated on the official return envelope.

Every postal voter is responsible for ensuring that the postal ballot return letter arrives at the electoral office in time. If the return letter is received too late, the vote will not be counted in the European election.

On-site postal voting

Alternatively, it is also possible to receive the polling card and the postal voting documents directly at the competent municipal authority. In that case voters may cast their votes directly on site. This is a useful approach for voters who may be absent on election day at short notice. In this way, they can avoid the mail delivery times to be considered when sending the postal voting documents by mail.

A separate press release will provide further information for the flooded areas and, if necessary, inform the voters about modifications in the rules.
