2024 European election: media statements and schedule of the Federal Returning Officer

WIESBADEN/BERLIN – The Federal Returning Officer will again offer a comprehensive service for the media on 9 June 2024, the day of the European election. Two media statements are scheduled to be made by the Federal Returning Officer in the Western Lobby on the Plenary Chamber Level of the German Bundestag in Berlin.

  • At around 3.30 p.m. on election day (9 June), the Federal Returning Officer will announce the “intermediate result for voter turnout by 2 p.m. on election day”.
  • The official provisional result is expected to be known in the early morning of 10 June. Once established, the result will immediately be communicated in a press release and announced by the Federal Returning Officer. A prior information notice with the expected time of the announcement will be issued around one hour beforehand. Detailed results will be available on the website of the Federal Returning Officer once the official provisional result has been communicated.

All press releases of the Federal Returning Officer will be disseminated in the usual manner via www.bundeswahlleiterin.de, e-mail, ots service and via @Wahlleitung_de on social media platforms “X” and “Instagram”.

Visit to polling station

To thank the polling station volunteers for their work, the Federal Returning Officer, Ruth Brand, and the Land Returning Officer of Berlin, Stephan Bröchler, will visit a polling station on election day:

  • at 10:00 a.m.: polling station 11-101 in the JFE “Mikado” youth centre, main hall (‘Saal’), Egon-Erwin-Kisch-Str. 1a, 13059 Berlin. Media admission is at 09:45 a.m.

Journalists wishing to attend the visit to the polling station are asked to register with the Press Office of the Federal Returning Officer (pressestelle@bundeswahlleiter.de), stating their surname, first name, date of birth, place of birth and the media outlet they represent.

Press accreditation required to attend media briefings in the German Bundestag

Please note: media representatives require valid accreditation to be admitted to the German Bundestag. Media representatives without permanent accreditation should apply in advance to the Press Unit of the Bundestag for accreditation (www.bundestag.de/presse/akkreditierung/).

In the night of 9 to 10 June, access to the Bundestag for the announcement of the provisional result will only be possible once the prior information notice has been issued. If media outlets plan to use broadcasting technology, it is advisable to coordinate this in advance with the Press Office of the Federal Returning Officer.

Generally, access to the German Bundestag for media representatives is exclusively via the entrance to the Jakob Kaiser Building (Dorotheenstraße 100) at the weekend of the European election!
