2019 European Election: 64.8 million people entitled to vote in Germany

WIESBADEN – According to a first estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), approximately 64.8 million Germans and other Union citizens will be entitled to vote in Germany in the ninth direct elections to the European Parliament on 26 May 2019, 33.2 million women and 31.6 million men.

Germany will continue to be represented in the European Parliament by 96 members. The total number of members of the European Parliament will decrease from currently 751 to 705 if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.

Roughly 60.8 million Germans will be entitled to vote in the election of the members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, approximately 3.9 million other Union citizens will be entitled to participate in the election. These are citizens of other European Union Member States who are resident in the Federal Republic of Germany. They can decide whether to exercise their right to vote in the European Parliament elections in Germany or in their Member State of origin. Just as the German voters, they must fulfil the legal requirements for voting in Germany as laid down in the European Elections Act. Special rules for enrolment in the registers of voters apply to non-German European Union citizens who live in Germany. There are roughly 3.9 million young voters who may participate for the first time in the election of the members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany. This number comprises a total of approximately 3.7 million German first-time voters (1.8 million females and 1.9 million males) who were born in the period from 26 May 1996 to 26 May 2001, and roughly 0.2 million other Union citizens.
